Apartment moving in Brooklyn and NYC

Gotham Moving Systems moves apartments of every size across Brooklyn and New York City, from five-floor walk-ups to doorman high-rises. When a building requires a certificate of insurance from the mover, we send it, floors, corners and hallways are protected, and furniture is wrapped, taken apart and put back together as part of the move.

For block-by-block notes, read the Brooklyn neighborhoods guide, and for a move across the river, see our Manhattan movers.

What sets us apart

How we handle apartment moves

The building paperwork

Some buildings require a certificate of insurance from the mover before a move. Check with your building, give us the details when you book, and we send the certificate it asks for.

Walk-ups

We know the twists and turns of climbing a five-floor walk-up. Tell us the floor at each end when you ask for a quote, because stairs take time.

Door staff and supers

We know many of the building managers, superintendents and door staff at the city’s largest residential buildings by name, which helps when a building has strict rules.

Protecting the building

Floors, corners and hallways are protected on every apartment move, and all glass items go into separate boxes.

In more detail

How an apartment move runs

Before the day: the building

Most of the work in an apartment move happens before the truck arrives. Some buildings require a certificate of insurance from the mover, so check with your building management, tell us what it needs when you book, and we send the certificate. That applies at both ends if you are moving from one doorman high-rise to another.

Ask the building about the rules for moving in and out too, including when the elevator can be used and where the truck can stop. Tell us what you learn and we plan the day around it.

Walk-ups

We know the twists and turns of climbing a five-floor walk-up. Stairs take time on an hourly move, so tell us the floor at each end, and mention any tight landings or turns in the staircase. If a sofa has to go up a narrow stairwell, we would rather hear about it when you book than find out on the day.

Elevator and doorman buildings

Elevator buildings and doorman high-rises come with their own rules. Over the years we have gotten to know many of the building managers, superintendents and door staff at the city’s largest residential buildings by name, and that helps when a building is strict.

What happens inside your apartment

Floors, corners and hallways are protected on every apartment move. Furniture is wrapped in blankets and shrink wrap, all glass items go into separate boxes, and essential furniture pieces are taken apart and put back together at the new place. All transportation, gas and tolls are included in the price.

  • Protection down the hallway and around the corners
  • Blankets and shrink wrap on furniture
  • Glass items in separate boxes
  • Disassembly and assembly of essential furniture pieces

Studios to large apartments

No residential move is too big or too small for our moving team. A studio and a large apartment get the same care, quality packing materials and skilled movers. If you want help with the packing, ask for it when you book and we plan the extra time.

Why it helps to book early in the process

An apartment move has more moving parts than people expect: the building, the elevator, the truck and the crew all have to line up. The sooner you call, the more time there is to sort the paperwork with your building and to settle the details of the quote. Tell us if anything changes along the way and we adjust the plan.

What to have ready when you call

  • Both addresses, and the floor at each end
  • Whether each building has an elevator, stairs or both
  • Whether the building needs a certificate of insurance
  • Roughly how many rooms, and whether you are packed
  • Photos or a video of the big pieces, if you can send them

We accept cash, bank checks, company checks and major credit cards. Personal checks are not accepted.
