Brooklyn neighborhoods: a mover's guide

People rank the best neighborhoods in Brooklyn by the coffee. We rank them by the stairs. Here is what six Brooklyn neighborhoods, and a handful in Manhattan and the Bronx, are actually like on moving day.

Common Questions

Moving in Brooklyn, answered

Some buildings require a certificate of insurance from the mover, and it is usually the managed buildings. Check with the building management at both your current and your new address about their requirements, then let us know, and we will be glad to assist.

Park Slope and Carroll Gardens are brownstone and row-house streets, and Brooklyn Heights is mostly older walk-ups, so most moves there involve stairs and a carry from the truck rather than an elevator.

Confirm the parking restrictions with your building management or the local police at both addresses before moving day. If the truck cannot park close enough, a long carry or a shuttle truck may be needed, and that is charged as an extra.

Empty every drawer, because furniture with full drawers is not transported. Turn off and disconnect appliances from electric, gas and water. Put mattresses and box springs in a mattress box or plastic cover. And confirm the parking rules and any certificate of insurance at both buildings.

Brooklyn Heights

On the East River side of the borough

Building stockA residential, historic neighborhood of older buildings, many of them walk-ups, with some elevator buildings.

Across the river

Manhattan and the Bronx on moving day

Manhattan moves are mostly about the building: the paperwork, the freight elevator and the hours it allows. Same questions as in Brooklyn, with more rules attached.

West Village

West side of Manhattan, on the Hudson River

Building stockOlder buildings on narrow, cobblestone streets.

What the move is likeNarrow streets can keep the truck from stopping at the door, so expect a carry. Older buildings mean stairs, so tell us the floor and whether there is an elevator.

Murray Hill

East side of Manhattan

Building stockOne of the older residential neighborhoods in the city, with a mix of walk-ups and larger buildings.

What the move is likeLarger buildings often ask the mover for a certificate of insurance, and many set the hours for moving day and reserve the freight elevator. Check with the building and we send what it asks for.

Washington Heights

Upper Manhattan

Building stockOlder residential buildings, many of them large.

What the move is likeOlder buildings can mean stairs or a small elevator. Tell us the floor, and whether the building wants a certificate of insurance or set move hours.

Upper East Side

East side of Manhattan, uptown

Building stockA wide variety of homes and apartment buildings, including doorman buildings.

What the move is likeManaged and doorman buildings usually need a certificate of insurance before a crew goes upstairs, and many only allow moves on weekdays. Ask the building for its rules early.

Upper West Side

West side of Manhattan, uptown

Building stockA residential neighborhood of historic buildings, from walk-ups to larger apartment buildings.

What the move is likeWalk-ups mean stairs and a carry, larger buildings mean booked elevators and paperwork. If your move goes between the two, tell us both sets of rules.

Manhattanville

West Harlem, uptown

Building stockResidential buildings of mixed ages.

What the move is likeWhether there is an elevator and who books it varies building to building. Ask the management, then tell us the floor and the stairs at each end.

University Heights

The Bronx

Building stockOlder streets and buildings, mostly residential.

What the move is likeOlder buildings mean stairs and narrow halls. Confirm the parking at both addresses, and ask the building whether it wants a certificate of insurance.
