What “licensed and insured” actually covers
Licensing, insurance and cover for your goods are different things, and only the last one decides what you get back if something breaks.
Fully licensed
We are fully licensed for any type of moving and storage, and our USDOT and MC numbers are printed on this page. When choosing a moving company, it is important to verify that they are licensed.
Insured
Under state regulations, every licensed carrier is required to carry moving, cargo and liability insurance.
Cover for your goods
This is valuation, which is not insurance. Basic coverage is included at no charge and pays $0.60 per pound per article. Full Value Protection is the upgrade, at $50 for $10,000 of coverage with a $500 deductible.
What it does not mean
Being licensed and insured does not mean every damaged item is replaced in full. What you get back depends on the valuation coverage you chose, so choose it before your move begins.
All the options are on our valuation coverage page.
Does your building need a certificate of insurance?
Some buildings require a certificate of insurance from the mover before a move. It is worth checking early.
How to ask for one
- Check with the building management at both your current and your new address about their requirements.
- Tell us the requirements when you book, and we will be glad to assist.
- A fee may apply, depending on the building’s requirements.
Call the office on 212-732-1234 or send the form and mention the certificate of insurance and the building address.
How to check any moving company
Use the same checks on us that you would use on anyone else. Here is what they are.
Ask for the numbers
A licensed mover prints its USDOT number on its paperwork and on its website. Ours are USDOT 3453789 and MC 1125197, and both are on this page.
Read the estimate
A blank or unsigned estimate is a red flag. Make sure it is filled in and signed before moving day.
Ask about insurance
Under state regulations, every licensed carrier is required to carry moving, cargo and liability insurance. Ask what that covers, and what it does not.
Ask about your goods
Cover for your goods is valuation, and it is separate from the carrier’s insurance. Ask which level you are on before the move begins.
Ask who does the move
Ask whether the company runs its own trucks. We are not a broker or a sub-contractor, and we run and own our own fleet.
Ask about your building
If your building wants a certificate of insurance from the mover, ask whether the company can provide one, and whether a fee applies.
Safety is the foundation of how we work
According to the American Moving and Storage Association, the moving industry is one of the most diverse in the country, with more than 7,000 companies operating in 13,900 locations.
Trained movers
We require intensive training for all movers, so everyone on your moving team knows our best practices.
Rules we know
We are well-versed in the interstate regulations and licenses that apply to a move.
Well-protected possessions
Every effort is made to make sure your possessions are well-protected, from the way furniture is wrapped to the way the truck is loaded.
If you have a claim
Call us and we will solve your claim as soon as possible. We value your opinion and want to hear from you.
The documents you will see on a move
A licensed mover works from paper, and so should you. Here is what to expect and what to read carefully.
The Bill of Lading
Moving services may not begin until you have signed the contract for service, the Bill of Lading, which authorizes the mover to begin.
The written estimate
Packing, materials and unpacking are only part of the estimate if they are listed in its services section. Read it and ask about anything that is missing.
Your valuation choice
Valuation is not insurance coverage, and by signing you may be waiving coverage above the minimum set by law. Read it before choosing, because Full Value Protection cannot be bought after the move has begun.
The inventory
All damage and missing items must be noted on the inventory logs, and damage must name each item at the time of delivery.
